What is included in an Annual Physical Exam?

An annual physical exam, also known as a routine check-up or annual wellness visit, is a comprehensive health assessment that can help detect and prevent potential health issues. The exam involves a series of tests and screenings to evaluate a patient’s overall health and identify any potential health risks. In this article, we will discuss what is included in an annual physical exam and why it is important to have one.

What is included in an Annual Physical Exam?

Medical history review

The first step of an annual physical exam is a medical history review. Your doctor will ask about your past and current health issues, including any chronic conditions, allergies, surgeries, and medications you are taking. This information will help your doctor understand your overall health and identify any potential risk factors.

Physical examination

After reviewing your medical history, your doctor will perform a physical examination. This exam typically includes measuring your height, weight, blood pressure, and heart rate. Your doctor will also check your eyes, ears, nose, throat, lungs, heart, abdomen, and other parts of your body to identify any signs of disease or abnormality.

Blood tests

Blood tests are an essential part of an annual physical exam. These tests help identify potential health issues such as high cholesterol, diabetes, liver disease, and kidney problems. Your doctor may also check your blood for other factors such as iron levels, thyroid function, and vitamin D.

Urinalysis

Urinalysis involves analyzing a urine sample to identify potential health issues. This test can detect urinary tract infections, kidney problems, and other conditions. Your doctor may also check for drug use and other substances in your urine.

Cholesterol screening

High cholesterol levels can lead to heart disease and other health issues. Your doctor will likely order a cholesterol screening during your annual physical exam. This test measures your cholesterol levels, including your LDL (“bad”) cholesterol, HDL (“good”) cholesterol, and triglycerides.

Cancer screenings

Cancer screenings are an important part of an annual physical exam, especially as you get older. Your doctor may recommend specific screenings based on your age, gender, and other risk factors. Some common cancer screenings include:

Mammograms: A breast cancer screening test for women

Pap smears: A cervical cancer screening test for women

Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test: A prostate cancer screening test for men

Immunizations

Immunizations are an important way to protect against infectious diseases. During your annual physical exam, your doctor may recommend updating your immunizations or getting vaccinated for new diseases. Common immunizations include the flu shot, tetanus booster, and vaccines for pneumonia and shingles.

Other screenings

Depending on your age, gender, and health history, your doctor may recommend other screenings or tests. For example, your doctor may recommend a bone density test for osteoporosis, a hearing test, or a vision screening.

Why are annual physical exams important?

Annual physical exams are an essential part of preventative health care. These exams can help detect potential health issues early, before they become more serious or life-threatening. By identifying health issues early, doctors can often provide more effective treatment and improve outcomes.

In addition to detecting potential health issues, annual physical exams can also help you maintain good overall health. Your doctor can provide advice and guidance on healthy lifestyle habits, such as eating a balanced diet, getting regular exercise, and reducing stress.

Having an annual physical exam can also help you build a relationship with your doctor. This can make it easier to communicate about your health concerns and ensure that you are receiving the best possible care.

When should you have an annual physical exam?

The frequency of annual physical exams may vary depending on your age, gender, and health history. In general, adults should have a physical exam every one to three years, while children and adolescents should have an annual exam.

This is the best dr I've been to in my 50 years of life. This doctor took his time and was extremely thorough. He is very knowledgeable and it was a great experience going to the dr when I came here for my 1st visit looking for a primary care provider. I am so happy that I have indeed found my new primary care provider! The staff are friendly and helpful. I would give 10 stars if I could. If you are in Fort Lauderdale area and searching for a new fast yet thorough and efficient doctor with no wait time and comfortable office this is the place! My girlfriend was impressed too and has now switched her primary care dr to this doctor here at vanguard!
